I had a great breakfast this morning at the The Crema Cafe in Seal Beach, CA. Excellent food and a teriffic location just blocks from the Seal Beach Pier make this a great destination for breakfast or lunch. Check out their flickr page for photos of their food.
I am in the process of importing this blog into my History Quilter blog to allow for a more streamlined blogging/podcasting experience for me. I am awaiting a new domain name application and will inform you all when the new blog goes live.

After I returned from breakfast this morning I worked on completing the first block of the Supernova Quilt and I am quite pleased with the results:

I plan on making three more just like what you see above and will complete the other four blocks in a red color scheme. This is a challenging block not only because of the 18" size but also because of how each individual portion of the block needs to match up almost perfectly for the design to work. See the X in the block? I think I have sewn and ripped out the seam in each of those sections, twice.

Time to go make dinner,
I learned to ski when I was three and have enjoyed many great ski vacations and too numerous to count day-trips to the local mountains in Southern California. I've been coming to Mammoth for a long time, first with my parents, then the crazy fun trips with work buddies, trips without children and now trips with children. I think I had my first and only bloody nose in Mammoth when I was a little girl and remember frigid trips up ski lifts when you think it can't get any colder. Skiing with teenagers is a different kind of fun as we bolt off the ski lift like race horses escape from the gate and tear down the hill as fast as possible. I do not win anymore but I hold my own and have a great time.

Out of the many things I enjoy about skiing, I thought I would share with you one of the more obscure; I love the sound of ski lifts. The gentle hum that clicks along in between towers is a very soothing accompaniment to the blinding white snow, forest green trees and the color wheel of apparel that is worn by skiers and snowboarders. Every once in awhile I'll hear that same hum and be reminded of ski trips to Mammoth.

The last thing I want to share is not actually in Mammoth Lakes, but in Bishop, CA. Schat's Bakery in Bishop,CA is a required stop either to/from Mammoth as they not only made excellent bread but have a huge pastry department. I would have taken a photo of the enormous pastry case but there was actually a sign posted to not take photos! If you ever go to Mammoth, make sure you stop here as you will not be disappointed.

Today I began feeling withdrawal symptoms from the lack of craftiness on my part in over a week so tomorrow I plan on spending a few hours with my sewing machine in podcast listening bliss. Also on the agenda is to record another History Quilter Podcast Episode which will touch on Quilting in the New England area from the 1780's through the 1850's.

Ciao!
Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03123080518327486537noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6224849946256113512.post-64368971129888679482011-04-23T20:46:00.000-07:002011-04-23T20:46:05.786-07:00Holiday MealsI really enjoy entertaining people in my home and being that I am usually the one to motivate both sides of the family to get together, holiday entertaining usually happens here. When I was growing up, my parents belonged to a couple of neighborhood Bridge (card game) groups which met once a month and I remember fondly how much fun it was when those groups came to our house. My mother would let me help her set up the card tables, lay out just the right tablecloths and decorate each table with special bowls filled with Nuts, some kind of Mint that tasted like toothpaste (ick) and M&M's. My little brother (Scott) and I would enjoy sneaking a few of those M&M's.

When the guests arrived Scott and I were allowed to visit for just a short while and then we had to retreat to the upstairs but inevitably I would creep down the hall and stand in just the perfect spot to where I was unseen but could see what was going on. I just realized that I never asked if my mother knew I was there.

Today in my home I will be hosting my father plus my in-laws and numerous others from the husband's side of the family for an early Easter Dinner. It's a fun group and everyone mixes together very well. Setting a table, planning and preparing the food and then mingling with guests are all things that my mother enjoyed and she definitely passed them along to me. It gives me great pleasure to feed the people that I care about.

Table:

Eight hours later, the table is back to it's normal size, the dishwasher is running and I'm tired but the early holiday meal was a big success as my guests left with good food in their stomach's and great stories in their memories. One of my guests had just returned from Egypt and Jordan so we all enjoyed the stories of their travels.
Focaccia, Mantova bread and pizza dough are in a steady rotation in my kitchen. I have always wanted to tackle a French style loaf to make lunches for my boys and finally decided to on Tuesday. I went to the website where I found my Focaccia and pizza dough recipes and found this:

Classic French Bread

For the first try I was very happy with the results - a crust that was not to hard but not to soft, an even distribution of small air pockets all throughout and a delicious taste. If you like to bake bread or want to try, check out this website. I don't know who this guy (his name is Tony van Roon) is but based on his bread recipes, he is brilliant. I think he's some kind of scientist/engineer with a passion for perfectly calculated recipes. Go check it out.

One more recipe I want to share with you all are the Chicken Egg Rolls from Annie's Eats. This was my first time trying one of her recipes and I was not disappointed. They were very good. I get comments from family and friends telling me what a great cook I am and although I don't deny that what comes out of my kitchen is pretty darn good most of the time, some credit should go to the fact that I find recipes that are very well written and follow them.

Chicken Egg Rolls

One perk of having a garden? These egg rolls have cabbage and green onions from my garden inside. Went to my garden last night to water and was pleased to see that the Butternut Squash, Tomatoes and Peppers I planted last week are all showing signs of growth. Love my Spring/Summer garden!

Have a great Thursday,

Ciao!
Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03123080518327486537noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6224849946256113512.post-17863982312991999092011-04-19T14:50:00.000-07:002011-04-19T16:41:13.242-07:00Do you ever have one of those times...when you are supposed to be enjoying the ambiance and the environment around you...but you are so focused in on one thing? I just had a great lunch at Border Grill in Santa Monica and did I taste the food? Yes and No. It was really good and I'll go back again but I had such a good time that I barely remember what I ate.

Just had to get that out there into the world.

Have you all seen Parenthood from 1989? I never seek it out to specifically watch but if I see it playing on TV I will sit down and watch it for awhile. There is one line that has been especially resonating with me lately: Karen (Mary Steenburgen) replies to her husband Gil (Steve Martin) "Well I happen to LIKE the roller coaster, okay?" Karen is responding to the story that Grandma told...check it out here. I too like the roller coaster of life where things can be scary and equally thrilling at the same time. I never liked the Merry Go Round either.

I whipped this mug rug out last Friday morning for a special friend for her birthday. She loves going to "tea" and so I went for a traditional/modern twist. I'm getting much better at machine sewing the binding on, starting on the back.

I used some scrap Anna Maria Horner fabric for the front and back and a almost perfect match for the binding from Joann's.

Can't stop tripping over Supernova quilt tops popping up all over blogs. I seriously dig the design and am really stretching my sewing/design skills with this quilt.

I'm using Kona Celery as the solid fabric and am very happy with the results so far. Not a whole lot of sewing to be going on around here in the near future as I've got a pile of homework, a big family dinner I'm hosting on Saturday and Spring Break for my boys next week.

Before I tell you more about this award go to Mary's blog at Piece Garden and check out her Monochromatic Quilt she just finished. GO NOW!

Alright...you've seen how amazing she is, right? Did you see the Monochromatic Quilt, the Picnic Blanket, the pillow she made back on Feb 25th? What about that darling raincoat? Did you see the Hideaway?

Yes, Mary is the one who got me started on Hideaway! I just received some in the mail yesterday and it is even cuter in person that it is on my computer screen.

Here are the details about the Stylish Blogger Award:
1. Thank and link back to the person who gave you the award.
2. Share seven things about yourself.
3. Award six recently discovered great bloggers.

Seven things: (in no particular order)
1. I'm starting to go grey but my husband hasn't noticed. LOL
2. I was adopted when I was three weeks old by the two best parents a girl could ever have.
3. Have been inside the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. Would go back again in an instant.
4. My favorite sandwich is Fresh Mozzarella Cheese, Tomato and Spinach on a crusty roll.
5. I watch The Real Housewives of OC and NJ but none of the others. Can't help it - it's like junk food for my brain.
6. I subscribe to 179 different crafty/quilting and food blogs. I have 254 unread posts right now. Eeek!
7. Sometimes I think I'm a terrible example of being a girl...I look in the mirror maybe twice a day, wear my usual blue jeans/tshirt most of my waking hours (not the same jeans/shirt!) and don't wear any makeup.

My nominations for the Stylish Blogger Award:
I have 35 Google Friends and about six more if you count those who show up on Google Reader. I feel like those bloggers are "my people" as they (YOU) have taken the time to read what I have to say so I in turn do the same. My six choices from among those 35 are:

Jenniffier's Sometimes Creative Life. Jenniffier is a super cute fellow CA girl who makes some lovely quilts. I'm diggin her Posh Quilt Top right now and can't wait to see how it turns out.

Quilter in the Gap. Just found Rhonda last week and have already enjoyed a few e-mails back and forth. She's doing Lily's Quilts QA and her Dresden plate fabric choices are very informative for me as I can watch along and learn. Go check out her survey!

Fluffy Sheep Quilting. Cindy is blogging from Ireland and was nice enough to comment on my History Quilter podcast so I found her blog and began to follow. In her Year of the Craft post she shared with her readers a quilt she had made for her mother. It's gorgeous - go check it out.

The Rebel Homemaker. Seriously Shelley is my newest gardening guru and she quilts! Check out her Flickr page - amazing! Did you see that Star Wars pillow?

Marilyn's Maze. The lovely Marilyn Pond seriously lives within walking distance to me and I'm hoping in 2011 to get the chance to meet her at a Quilters by the Sea guild meeting. You might have seen her recently profiled by Sew Cal Gal with her Two Wacky Women quilt retreats she puts on with her friend Robin.

Becky's Blabber. Love this gal - would have loved to have a sister like her. She is doing her best to be crafty in a houseful of males, just like me. :) Love her Mardi Gras Quilt and don't miss her Medical Lab Quilt. So cool and so creative!

Now for the WIP:

Open Windows with machine binding attached

Only going to show one...the Open Windows quilt for my son is almost done. I attached the binding on the front by machine this morning and will begin the hand stitching of the back tonight. This quilt is so big I'll have to take it to the local Laundromat to wash and dry it.

Now I've got to run and study for an Economics exam at 2pm. Wish me luck calculating GDP, but first go check out the other WIP's at Lee's Freshly Pieced!
They are so good and easy to make. You just need a nonstick pan and a little planning ahead and of course the ingredients. My younger son and I made these last night:

Basic Sweet Crepes (from the 1997 Joy of Cooking Edition pg 804.)

1/2 Cup All Purpose Flour (I use 3/4 cup)

1/2 Cup Milk

1/4 Cup Lukewarm Water

2 Large Eggs

2 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter, melted

1 1/2 Tablespoons Sugar

Pinch of Salt

Combine all ingredients in a blender and let rest for an hour. When you are ready to make the crepes, give the batter another whirl in the blender. Heat up your pan (med high) and spread a small amount of unsalted butter around. When butter is melted, pour about 1/4 scant cup of batter in your pan and then pick up pan to swirl batter around. It's like a pancake - you are not looking for bubbles, but the sides will show when it is ready to turn. Turn over with a large spatula (or flip if you are really cool. I'm not cool.) and cook for a very short time. Your crepe is now done and ready to be embellished with anything you like.

Nutella, bananas, butter/powdered sugar, any kind of jelly/jam - the sky is limitless.

Observing in classrooms is awesome. This week I hit 10th grade World History, 11th Grade U.S. History and 12th Grade Economics. I'm becoming emotionally invested in the students that I observe - I just can't help it. A few of them know that I am the sister of another teacher at the school but it seems to make little difference - they are all great kids. I have now completed 20 of the 45 hours required for the course. I'll finish up with 30 at the high school and then move on to do the remaining 15 at the middle school level.

Looks great until the one blowing out the candles blows the shavings across the table!

An amazing day on the soccer field in Anaheim, CA was a great way to usher in the month of March. I'm taking one for the team though today by staying home and letting my younger son escape the misery of soccer game watching... it did allow me to record History Quilter Episode #4 and work my son's Open Windows quilt. Photos of the back to come very soon!

Check out the show notes for Episode #4 at www.historyquilter.blogspot.com and check out the new (to me) quilt shop I visited in Anaheim, CA.
I did. I am not much of a Television watcher but I do love to go to the movies so I do usually watch the Oscars. As my boys are getting older I am in that transition stage of not having to take them to movies (thank goodness - can't tell you how many times I have fallen asleep during a kid film) but also not having time to see the kind of movies I want to see. So of all the movies nominated last night I had only seen one movie. Guess I saw the right film - being a Colin Firth fan has it's benefits.

I'm finishing up my lunch of leftover Indian food I made the other night. Between Indian Food and Sushi I could live the rest of my life and be happy. Indian Food is easy to make as I live so close to a large Indian community (access to spices, etc.) but the Sushi - not so easy to make. A foodie friend of mine was out of work for most of 2009 and we used to go out to lunch every other week or so and have sushi - don't get me wrong we weren't living it up, but a local sushi place had a $9.95 lunch special that was out of this world. She found a job in early 2010 and so no more foodie lunches.

Made some incredible headway on the quilt for my older son which I have named Open Windows as my son always enjoys having his window open. His birthday is next week so I'm on overdrive to get this completed. The top is finished and now on to the back:
My son told me he wanted black and white stripes for the back - 100inches x 6 inches and now after getting this monster together, there is no way the strips on the back are going to be that narrow. I'll figure that out tomorrow. I am going to quilt this myself with straight lines but I haven't come up with a pattern yet.

I got home a little while ago (after a stop at The Coffee Bean to get myself a well-deserved Hot Chocolate) from my first MRI experience. The claustrophia part wasn't the real problem as I kept my eyes closed and did my best to think about dinner ideas, my 2pm Econ test or fabric, etc., but making myself be still was the challenging part. At about 3/4 of the way through the 20 minutes or so that the test took, I almost lost it.

Was this (imagine an illustration of my fingers inserted here - I cannot draw so I won't pain you) close to shouting to the tech to stop the test.

Seriously.

Kept it together though and finished it hoping that the 20 minutes or so of the uncomfortableness was worth it to find out what is going on in my L5-Sacrum area which vexes me. I've never been one for easily explainable ailments so this one with my back seems to be par for the course. I can run, jog, play soccer, garden without a problem but when I sit for too long of a time or when I lie down (yea, sleeping is real fun) that lower left region of my back starts to scream at me. Why an MRI? Well, we (still) have health insurance and although I am not one to milk insurance of any kind, this has been going on for over two years now and Chiropractic care, tons of stretching and exercising and even a new bed have not changed my symptoms so therefore, an MRI.

So that is my back issue WIP. Now on to crafting!

Blockapalloza:
Finished Blocks Four and Six and have cut out the fabric for Block seven and eight and nine are look real pretty on the computer. I will do both but probably not do the appliqué on Block eight as appliqué scares me.

Block Four

Block Six

When I got "Kona'ed" about a week ago, I immediately set out to cut six inch squares with most of those fat quarters for a quilt I am making for my older son. He began laying them out in a manner he liked then got bored so I finished it up. I needed a photo so that when I finished sewing the columns I would have a reference point. I'm sashing this with Kona Coal and so far I have sewn up two columns - I'll save photos for the big finish!

Episode #3 is now available on both iTunes and podbean. I have now created a blog for The History Quilter in Blogger as the podbean site is not all that user friendly - you can get it here: http://historyquilter.blogspot.com/

Complete podcast notes will be available (once I get a chance to create them) for all three episodes will be on the blogger site.

No photos today, sorry. I've been very busy the past week with a lot of school commitments, braces put on for my younger son and a few doctor appointments for my father. After the husband wakes up from his morning nap we will be off to my garden plot to check out how the rain we have received over the last two days affected the garden. Thanks to Shelley at The Rebel Homemaker for some great ideas for my garden - I can't wait to plant potatoes! By the way, she posted a super cool Star Wars pillow the other day - go check it out.

Tomorrow should be a very well deserved catch up day with the boys off from school and the husband back to work! (hehe) Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03123080518327486537noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6224849946256113512.post-33115834785968767552011-02-09T12:09:00.000-08:002011-02-09T17:27:34.618-08:00WIP and thoughts on the weekAhh, it is Wednesday but even better...I slept wonderfully last night. For as long as I can remember I have had a restless leg problem which usually bothers me in the evening but does not interrupt my sleep. Sunday and Monday night's sleeps were fairly miserable as I could not get the restless feeling to go away - iPod, meditation and willing it away didn't work so both days I woke up bleary eyed. Strange how our bodies work.

A few quiet weekends left before Club Soccer ramps back up here in So Cal and I am really looking forward to it. My older son is playing Volleyball in high school and that also begins in a few weeks and can't wait to see him play. I was so lucky when I was in high school as my father (who worked at home) came to every high school soccer game I played in no matter where the location. He would always be the lone person in the visitor's section whenever we played at locations which were far from our home. Twenty plus years later, my father attends every high school Basketball game that my younger brother coaches. In fact, I am taking him tonight to my brother's last game of the season. It will be a bit sad for both my brother and I as this may be the last game my father goes to watch.

Gardening: I have tomato and eggplant seedlings coming up and just transplanted them to bigger containers yesterday. I harvested Cauliflower from my garden plot the other day and have Spinach, Red Cabbage, Yellow and Red Onions, Garlic and Shallots and Kale growing nicely right now. Can't wait for the Kale to get bigger so I can begin harvesting as I love Kale! One of the rules at my garden plot is that we may not plant Tomatoes/Peppers/Eggplant before March 1st so I play by the rules and planted an Early Girl tomato in my backyard yesterday. 50 days from now I should be munching on my first homegrown tomato of 2011.

Quilting:
I have almost finished piecing together my School Yard quilt that I am making for a teacher friend of mine. Just need to add some solid sashing all around and need to finding some fabric for the backing. BTW, the pattern is called Square One and it is from Camille Roskelly's Simplify book.
Very busy today with cleaning house, a bed delivery, tooth extractions (not mine), making dinner and just the usual whirlwind life I lead. Tomorrow morning I will take the CBEST test to test me on my basic writing, reading and mathematics skills. I did take a practice test yesterday and did just fine. Phew!
#1 First is the Sliced Coins QA. Dreadful photo - I should have put these down on a sheet or something as my carpet is bluish/green (seriously - came with the house) but in person these coins look great! Didn't lay it out with the sashing yet.

Sliced Coins QA

#2 Working on something fun for a teacher friend of mine. I had a charm pack and honey bun of the American Jane Punctuation line and I am making a quilt using the Square One pattern from Camille Roskelley's Simplify book. It is coming along nicely but I forgot to take photos while I had it out.

#3 About to start a XL Twin sized quilt for my older son. We finally bought him a XL Twin bed (the boy is way too tall for a Twin sized) and he has requested a quilt made by me! I'm actually thrilled and can't wait to make it happen.

#4 Blockapalloza QA - completed block one, cut out fabric for block two and looked at block three. Hmm.

#5 Fat Quarter Shop BOM - behind by three/four months. Another hmm.

#6 - organizing all of the above into an area the size of a shoebox!

Had a pretty rotten couple of days last week. Last Thursday night was my first education class for the SS Teaching Credential and so during the day I was a bit nervous - I always get a little anxious before first classes but then it passes and all is fine. What then added to that minimal stress was a texting fight I got myself into with a family member at about 4pm - two hours before class time. Not enjoyable one bit. Do any of you have a sibling that you have practically no connection with, but have always wanted to? Have always tried to but whatever you do it seems to never be right?

Two hours later at approximately 6:30pm, as the teacher is telling us how MUCH work it is going to be not only this semester but the entire credential, I started having doubts. Doubts about whether I should go for it, whether I could do it, etc. When I got home from school that night I burst into tears on the couch with my husband and poured out all of my thoughts. How can I put this credential program before my family whom I've put #1 for almost 15 years? Most of the classes are at night - family hates that. I need new clothes for observing in the classroom and student teaching! (Stay at home mom uniform for almost 15 years - do I have any work clothes? No.)

My husband was very supportive and helped to calm me down. Had another good cry Friday morning after the children were off to school and then righted myself. It was hard to have both of those events mingle in my head - I'm very sure that if I had not already been stressed out by my sibling then what I learned in class would not have mattered so much. Almost a week later now and I'm full steam ahead with the credential program and no where with the relationship with my sibling.

If you read all of that, thank you. I appreciate it. Here is a bonus for you:

But I muddle on determined to ignore the pain and continue on with my busy life.

First on my WIP list:

I am participating in the Sliced Coins Quilt Along hosted by Elizabeth D. of Don't Call Me Betsy. I decided to go outside of my creative and rather comfortable box and use solids in order make a decorative quilt for the end of my bed. I am using Kona Champagne, Basil, Curry, Honey and Butterscotch. Having a Kona card has been such a big help as I was able to sit on my bed and match Kona colors to the colors around my room. I look forward to the outcome.

I shared with you all before that I had such a tough time myself when I tried to quilt it so sending it out seemed the right choice, and boy was I right.

I'm back in school this week working on my Teaching Credential. TB test, Fingerprint Scan, sign up for the CBEST test are just a few of the tasks I need to complete this week. I was warned that the first class of the teaching credential was the paper-pushing class and they weren't kidding. My other class is ECON 300 - Econ for non-majors and as usual I was the oldest person in the classroom of 100. In the introduction class yesterday the teacher kept talking about some kind of disgusting frozen pizza (sorry - admitted food snob here) to illustrate the labor supply, so I substituted that example with a quilt. Made me smile and worked very well.

Well yesterday the husband and the man/boy decided to pull off the useless corrugated plastic off the top of the patio cover that sits just outside the south side of our home and now...it is so bright! They are only about 40% done but it has made such a difference already. How cool is FREE remodeling?
Check out Amanda Murphy's website for the coolest place mat pattern I have ever come across. She posted a tutorial for the place mats and napkins here today.
Do you listen to podcasts? I sure do, many of them in fact. Someday I will list them all but for now if you love food, here is a great podcast called Good Food that is produced here in the Los Angeles area by Evan Kleiman a lovely gal who owns a owns Angeli Cafe in Los Angeles. You can listen to the show directly from the above link or you can get it on iTunes. My favorite part each week is when Jonathan Gold (the guy has won a Pulitzer for his food writing!) comes on the show and although he talks about restaurants that I will never get to as they are just too far away, I just love his voice.

Last thing for today: Harold McGee. Basically the coolest food scientist around who not only can write about it but sounds great on the radio too. Too bad he doesn't have a podcast. He does have an occasional column in the New York Times. He wrote On Food and Cooking back in the 80's and came out with a revised edition in 2004. Not a recipe book but a book about how we as humans digest, cook and use food. He has a new book out called Keys to Good Cooking: A Guide for Making the Best of Foods and Recipes. Just put this in my Amazon.com cart.
Time to get back to the16th century Roman painter/gentleman costume.

Fun day ahead for me; my best girlfriends are taking me to lunch to help me celebrate my b-day. I turned 42 a couple of days ago and actually had a wonderful day. The family and I went to have Indian Food for dinner at a restaurant in the Little India section of Artesia, CA and inside the restaurant there were (I swear!) three sari quilts hanging on the walls! Boy did I wish I had a camera so I could show you all. They were gorgeous. Someday when I am shopping there for spices, I will have to pop in a sari shop to check out the sari fabrics.

Oh one more thing: The gal who is quilting my That Girl Quilt called me last night and told me that I did a great job on the top! That was a thrill to hear from someone who not only quilts her own work but does others for a living. Brought a big smile to my face. :)
